Intro

Jonathan Kozol, author of Letters to a Young Teacher, has used his personal experience as a teacher to advise new teachers on how to be successful in the classroom. This book includes letters exchanged between Kozol and new teacher, Franchesca. The Boston inner-city school in which Franchesca is employed is the same school where Kozol spent many years teaching. Between the letters and visits from Kozol, Franchesca was able to learn what good teaching really is. Not only did Franchesca learn, but also Kozol was also able to reflect back on his experience and uncover cherished memories in which he forgot. After reading this book, I feel that all individuals entering the field of teaching should use this book as a resource. Franchesca included many concerns within her letters, even concerns of controversial topics. As a first year teacher, Franchesca faced many obstacles in her classroom. Jonathan Kozol’s advice, personal stories, and encouragement helped Franchesca grow as a professional and an individual.

Scenario Letter

Dear Mr. Kozol,

Last month I received a call from my hometown elementary school about taking a position as a fourth grade teacher. The teacher I would be replacing is going on maternity leave right around Christmas. Although I am very excited for this opportunity, I am also very nervous because this would be my first time teaching as a professional. I am reaching out to you because I feel quite inspired from the advice you have Franchesca in your book, Letters to a Young Teacher. I read this book as an assignment for one of my college courses and immediately fell in love with the stories you told. When starting next semester with my new fourth graders, I plan on using this book as a resource for my potential questions and concerns.
However, I do have one question that I feel needs answered before I start my teaching career. How should I gain the affection of the students without taking away from their teacher? It is very important for me to have a good relationship with my class. I understand that I may not “be better” than their teacher, but I just hope to make just as good as an impact. Your response would be greatly appreciated. I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season!

Sincerely,

Miss Fillers

How Kozol Influenced Me Personally

Dear Mr. Kozol,

After reading this book, I really feel that the personal stories and suggestions you provided will really help me as I start teaching. A crucial part to being a good teacher is being able to ask for help and search for resources. Your book really emphasizes the importance of that. Franchesca has many concerns for her position at an inner-city school in Boston. Her concerns were quite similar to many other first year teachers. But one great thing that Franchesca did was reach out for support. Many first year teachers fear that by asking for help, they are showing weakness and incompetence. A good teacher knows when to ask for help and how to work with their fellow employees. There are so many resources out there for first year teachers to take advantage of, such as your book. I have no doubt that I will seek the guidance from other teachers. Because after all, teachers are still learning along side their students.

Until next time,

Miss Fillers

My Favorite Chapter

Dear Mr. Kozol,

Although the entire book was wonderful, to me, the best chapter was thirteen. This chapter focuses on the importance of getting to know the parents of the students. A huge part of my educational philosophy is parent involvement. Reflecting back on my own school days, there were many parents who chose to volunteer or at least take the time to show their involvement. My parents chose to be quite engaged in my education, which in turn really encouraged me to do my best. I want the same opportunity for my students, which is why I will put a strong emphasis on including parents. I plan on writing weekly newsletters, which will discuss what the children are working on. I also plan on sending out my own evaluations so I can gain feedback and insight from parents. I want to make the classroom more than just four walls and a cluster of desks. I want my classroom to be viewed as a safe zone or a second home. Good teaching fosters opportunities of making the students a family.

Thank you,
Miss Fillers

Extra Letter

Dear Mr. Kozol,

School is going great! I really feel that I am getting to know my students well and am fostering an encouraging classroom environment. One of the first assignments I gave the students was to write about someone that has inspired them. While some students wrote about famous football players, family veterans, and best friends, I wrote about you. I have reread your book since starting at OES and I feel more confident about my teaching abilities. The students asked me if it was possible to meet you, so I am inviting you to our inspiration reading in two weeks. We are also inviting parents and other family members to come and listen to the students’ stories about which they feel inspires them the most. We would love for you to come and hear our stories. Cookies and beverages will be provided! We would love to hear from you soon!

Once again, thank you,

Miss Fillers

  1. Your scenario letter is very interesting. Food for thought after reading your blog..What do you think the feedback could potentially be from Mr. Kozol would be? In your extra letter how would you engage Mr. Kozol with the class and incorporate him into the lessons as a resource for these inspirational readings?

    1. He recommended doing in home visits to the families homes! He also recommended having families nights, not just school wide, but also on a classroom level. This helps build communities and connections within the classroom. At times he worked in schools where principals weren't as supportive of family connections, but he still made sure to go out of his was and follow his beliefs in making these connections and pursuing them on his own. These weren't planned out meetings, he even talked about how for one meeting he was in the neighborhood getting dinner with his girlfriend and they both walked to a families house afterwards just to check in and see the family.
